The 1HD-FTE is Toyota's top-tier HD-series heavy-duty inline-six turbo diesel engine, representing a complete upgrade from the older 1HD-T mechanical platform. This advanced engine features a thick reinforced cast iron block and cylinder head, forged heavy-duty crankshaft, twin overhead camshaft 24-valve layout, factory-matched CT15 turbocharger with air-to-air intercooler, and Denso ECD-V3 electronic distributor injection pump with independent ECU control system.

Important Notice

Three completely non-interchangeable Toyota 4.2L inline-six diesel variants are available in the market:

Top electronic intercooler 1HD-FTE (this item): 24V DOHC cylinder head, electronic injection pump + ECU, full intercooler pipeline layout, reinforced forged internal moving parts, exclusive electronic wiring harness and EGR assembly
Mid mechanical turbo 1HD-T: 12V SOHC simple cylinder head, pure mechanical inline pump without ECU, no factory intercooler interface, weaker internal parts, prone to high temperature under continuous heavy load
Entry naturally aspirated 1HZ: No turbo, no intercooler, no electronic components, indirect vortex chamber injection, low torque output, only suitable for light daily off-road

Two dedicated mounting configurations are available for the 1HD-FTE: HDJ100 full-size SUV wide reinforced bracket version and HDJ79 pickup compact off-road bracket version. Engine mounting feet, cooling fan bracket, flywheel housing, and clutch housing cannot be directly interchanged. The Coaster bus version adopts heavy-duty long mounting feet matching passenger car transmission system and is incompatible with LC off-road chassis.
